1. What is a Certificate of Fitness (CoF)?
A CoF is a regular inspection required for vehicles used commercially on New Zealand roads, such as trucks, buses, and rental vehicles. It ensures the vehicle is safe and roadworthy according to the New Zealand Transport Agency’s (NZTA) standards.
2. How often do I need a CoF for my truck?
Most heavy commercial vehicles must undergo a CoF inspection every 6 months, although some may qualify for extended intervals (e.g., 12 months) if they have a strong safety and maintenance record. Your inspection frequency is determined by NZTA.
3. What does a CoF inspection cover?
A CoF inspection checks key safety systems including brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, lights, chassis, and structural integrity. It also covers windscreen condition, mirrors, seatbelts, and other legal requirements. You can find NZTA’s heavy vehicle inspection requirements here.
4. What happens if my vehicle fails the CoF?
If your vehicle doesn’t pass the CoF, you’ll receive a list of issues to fix. Once these are addressed, you can return for a re-inspection. Getting a Pre-CoF inspection can help reduce the risk of failure.
5. Can Truckstops issue CoFs themselves?
Some but not all Truckstops branches can issue CoFs on-site. However, any branch that cannot will facilitate the inspection for you and manage the entire process regardless of which branch you come into, saving you time and hassle.
6. How do I book a CoF service with Truckstops?
You can book online at https://truckstops.co.nz/request-a-service or contact your nearest Truckstops branch directly.
7. Why should I choose Truckstops for my CoF?
With nationwide coverage, trained technicians, and end-to-end service — from pre-inspection through to repairs and inspection facilitation — Truckstops makes your CoF experience quicker, easier, and more reliable.
